How to Unblock a Toilet

If your toilet is not flushing properly or is overflowing, try these methods to resolve the issue.

1. Wait and Observe

If your toilet is slow to drain but not overflowing:

• Leave it for 15-30 minutes to see if the water level naturally goes down.
• Sometimes, water pressure will help push the blockage through the pipes.
• If the water remains stagnant, move on to the next method.

2. Use a Toilet Plunger

A plunger is one of the most effective tools for unblocking a toilet:

• Ensure you use a flange plunger, which is specifically designed for toilets.
• Insert the plunger into the toilet bowl, making sure it fully covers the hole.
• Press down firmly and pull up repeatedly for 20-30 seconds.
• Check if the water drains. If not, repeat the process.

3. Hot Water and Washing Up Liquid

This method helps break down blockages without using harsh chemicals:

• Add a few squirts of washing up liquid to the toilet bowl.

• Leave it to sit for 10-15 minutes.
• Try flushing to see if the blockage clears.

The combination of hot water and detergent helps loosen grease and paper-based blockages.

4. Use a Toilet Auger (Drain Snake)

If a plunger doesn’t work, a toilet auger (also known as a drain snake) may be necessary:

• Insert the auger into the toilet drain and twist it to break up the blockage.
• Push and pull gently to manoeuvre it through the pipes.
• Once resistance decreases, remove the auger and flush the toilet.

This method is useful for blockages deeper in the plumbing system.

5. Baking Soda and Vinegar

A natural alternative to chemical cleaners:

• Pour one cup of baking soda into the toilet.
• Add two cups of vinegar.
• Let the mixture fizz for 30 minutes.
• Pour hot water into the bowl and try flushing.

This solution works well for minor clogs and deodorising the toilet.

6. Chemical Drain Cleaners (Use with Caution)

If other methods fail, a toilet-safe chemical drain cleaner might help:

• Follow the instructions carefully and ensure the product is suitable for toilets.
• Pour the recommended amount into the toilet and leave for the stated time.
• Flush with water to clear the blockage.

Warning: Overuse of chemical cleaners can damage pipes and should only be a last resort.

To avoid dealing with a clogged toilet in the future, follow these simple tips:

• Flush only toilet paper and waste – Avoid flushing wipes, sanitary products, or other foreign objects.
